The Renault FT17 is a struggle between
    good and evil, between life and death, with a bright heart fighting for love!


    The Renault FT-17 was a light tank produced by France during World War l. It was thefirst production tank to have its armament within a fully rotating turret. As an old soldier,FT-17 went through World War One and World War Two. The innovative design - crewcompartment at the front, engine compartment at the back, and main armament in a re-volving turret became and remains the standard tank layout. As such, many historians of warfare have called the Renault FT- 17 the world's first modern tank.


    This machine was first proposed and conceived by Eug è ne Brillié (the chief engineer ofSchneider CA tank), and then designed by Colonel JeanBaptiste Eug è ne Estienne (thefather of French tanks) between May and September 1915 The core idea came from Esti
    enne himself: instead of cumbersome armored boxes, he imagined an immense fleet of.cheap bees - five or six light tanks for the price of a single Saint Chamond heavy tank.Small, fast and narrow, they could, by their sheer number, overwhelm the enemy defense -hence the . swarm of light tank  concept. Finally, this project had the enthusiastic support of the Consultative Committee of the Assault Artillery.

    The Renault FT-17 included many innovative designs: a rotating turret, a rear engine config-uration, a front driver, with the turret operator (and commander) right behind - these basicfeatures are still found on modern main battle tanks. The turret of F T-17 could easily be rotated 360 degrees by the turret operator or be locked in position with a handbrake, so that the shooting angle is greatly improved, and combat efficiency has been doubled.


    Renault' s talented engineer Rodolphe Ernst Metzmaier (1887-1985) designed a narrowriveted box (slightly more than an average shoulders width), with flat sides, pointed noiseand sloped rear. All available internal space was used, with almost no room to spare. Theengine was located at the rear, and separated from the fighting compartment by a firewall.The driver sat on the front, his feet acting on the brake and release clutch pedals between  the large pair of idler wheels.


    The Renault FT- 17 had a two-man layout: a sitting driver in the front, who controled thespeed and direction of movement; a standing commander in the middle of the car, whooperated the tank's main weapon, a 37 mm gun or a 7.92 mm machine gun. Behind the two member positions were tightly connected engine and transmission gears.


    For mass production and the convenience of welding, most of the body armor was designed at right angle. The Renault FT- 17 was the first tank to adopt separate compart-ments: engine room, battle chamber, and driver cabin.


    This design allowed the engine exhaust and noise to be separated by steel plate, andimproved the combat environment. The overall design was pioneering: the engine,gearbox, and driving wheel in the rear; driving and other control devices in front; onlyone driver was needed, so that the F T-17 was lighter and easier to control, compared with heavy tanks at that time.


    The Renault 4-cylinder air-cooled petrol engine was started either by a rear crank oran internal one. It was handily reachable from above, protected by a large hood. Thepetrol tank was installed after the turret and before the engine, high for gravity and well-protected except from above.


    A steel chain was usually suspended on the rear tail in order to be used for towing anoth-er vehicle. Large metal boxes were suspended on the flanks, with shovels, picks, spanner and other tools, as well as sometimes additional fuel tanks and spare track links.

    The short chassis, equipped with the wide track, gives the "lightweight" tank an amazing ability to cross trenches and obstacles.

    With the continuous improvement of the Renault FT-17, the diameter of the road wheelswas increased, rubber tracks were installed, and high elastic suspension was adopted. Asa result, the maximum speed of FT-17 was increased to 12 km/h. The modified M26/27model, equipped with a more powerful engine, had a maximum speed of 16 km/h and an operational range up to 160 km.


    The battlefield debut of the Renault FT-17 occurred on 31 May 1918 east of the I
    Forest of Retz, during the Second Battle of the Marne. From then on, FT-17 con
    tinued to prove its undeniable success, especially its mobility advantage. Thesesmall tanks, with the largest production during World War l, were provided to mostWestern front units by mid 1918, and they were involved in all major offensives(4356 engagements and 746 lost in action), successfully crossing no man s land and cleaning trenches as designed, but also forests.


    The excellent performance on the battlefield of World War One created conditions forFT-17 to go to the world. Because of authorized production and military purchases, as well as local military conflicts such as the Russian Civil War, the SovietPolish War andthe SovietFinnish War, FT-17 spread all over the world. For a long time, this small tanknot only became the main army equipment of some countries with weak industrial base,but also became the imitation object of many countries when they developed tanks. In-cluding the United States, Poland, Brazil, Finland, China, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain,Belgium, Switzerland, Yugoslavia and other countries had bought FT-17, and these tanks remained in first line many years in these countries.



    During World War One, China knew little about tanks the armored boxes. It wasnot until more than a decade after their advent that Chang TsoLin, the warlord ofBeiyang government, pioneered the Chinese first armored forces. In 1922, ChangTso-Lin fought a final battle with some other warlords, purchasing a large numberof armaments from Britain and France, including 36 Renaulf FT-17 tanks. In 1926,these tanks were first used in battle against another warlord, Wu Peifu.


    With the end of World War ll, the legacy of FT-17 has come to an end as a collection of
    museums and collectors, or simply as an industrial raw material, but the romantic,
    unyielding spirit of France is eternal - true love is immortal, the fire is reborn!
